Canada is a constitutional monarchy. In this system, the Queen or King of Canada is the head of state, while the Prime Minister is the head of government. The functions of the monarch are generally carried out by her representative, the Governor General (federal) and the Lieutenant-Governor (provincial). These duties include promoting Canadian sovereignty, serving as Commander-in-Chief, presentation of orders, decorations, medals and awards, and others.
The head of government is the Prime Minister. The three main levels of government are federal, provincial or territorial, and municipal. Each level has different areas of responsibility depending on geography and types of services.
Municipal Government
he municipal government receives its power from the provincial government. It deals with issues concerning the community such as: city parks, public transportation, collection of garbage and recycling, water and sewer services, fire prevention, city roads and sidewalks, licensing and control of pets, land use bylaws, commercial permitting, building code inspections, and local policing.
The Musquodoboit Valley is a part of the Halifax Regional Municipality. It is part of District 1 that includes Waverly, Fall River and Musquodoboit Valley, has a population of nearly 21,000 residents and is made up of suburban residential neighborhoods and rural farming communities.

Municipal Planning Strategy (MPS): The MPS outlines the overall vision and goals for land use and development in the municipality. It provides a high-level framework for growth, conservation, and community development.
Land-Use By-Law (LUB): The LUB is directly linked to the MPS. It divides the municipality into different land use districts (zones) and establishes procedures for processing development applications. The LUB specifies permitted and restricted uses for each zone, helping minimize land-use conflicts. In summary, the LUB ensures orderly and efficient development by regulating land and building use within Nova Scotia municipalities.
