Multi-Use Path Project

The Musquodoboit Valley Communities Association’s Civics & Culture working group has been exploring options to create a safe, accessible, multi-use pathway that will connect Musquodoboit Rural High School (MRHS) to the “Square” in Middle Musquodoboit. This path would begin at the intersection of Glenmore Road and Highway 224 and run 1 kilometre to the MRHS bus loop.

This kind of pathway has been something the community has been interested in developing for years in order to help keep students/pedestrians safe and to improve walkability to resources such as the McCurdy Woodlot, Natural Playspace, outdoor school courts, and more.

Phase 1 – Conceptual Plan

To date, a conceptual plan for the multi-use pathway has been completed by Upland Planning + Design Studio. This conceptual plan is for information purposes only. Funding & construction options will be explored as part of the next phase of the process. The conceptual plan was funded by CertainTeed (leading the Antrim Gypsum Project).

Phase 2 – Funding Opportunities

Potential next steps we, as a community, could explore to make the plan a reality:

  • Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) has identified Middle Musquodoboit as one of five rural communities in its program to improve walkability. If the project moves ahead, HRM will host public engagement sessions to ask whether our community would like to participate. Participation would involve a fixed area rate of $0.021 per $100 of taxable property value to help fund construction and maintenance.
  • Another option is to form a Trail Association. This group could apply for available funding to build the trail and would take responsibility for maintenance (with funding supports available). The Trail Association could also support other Valley trail projects.

We invite everyone to be part of the conversation. Share your ideas and watch for updates on the Musquodoboit Valley Communities Association Facebook page: facebook.com/the.MVCA or email us your thoughts.
